I'm not an ex-pat, but I have lived in IA and my parents still live in the Waterloo area. My view might be a little prejudicial, there is good and bad. It kinda depends on what you like or are used to. NYC it ain't, but there are worse places to raise a family. Hope you like cold and snow!!

Try building a cricket ground.

You know, "Build it and they will come".

Not being facetious. Welcome to the site. Wish I knew more about Iowa, but I would imagine it's much like the rest of the midwest, where I do live. Long cold winters, hot summers, not very cosmopolitan. I'm sure others will have more to add.

I also found this, which is conceivably more useful than my first comment.
