The ability to enter the country legally with the intent of staying for more than a short vacation is the essential first step in becoming an expat.

The ability to accept that you're in a different country, and things may not happen the same way as they did in your home country.

It doesn't necessarily mean they are better, it doesn't necessarily mean they are worse...it just means they are different. It also doesn't mean that you are forbidden from bitching and moaning about them, but it does mean you should be very careful about the company/audience if you are going to!

This. I could have written it myself.

My world is now quite different from the one I grew up in, but I like it, mostly. A few of my gripes I share with my (USC) wife, a few others I share here, but otherwise I am very cautious about criticizing local customs or practices, or suggesting that the way things are done in Britain are better (IMO most are not any better in the UK, just different).

What about the 'White Mischief'-type expats? Brits have a long history of not accepting they are in a different country
