Re: Entering the UK with a US passport
Hello. I'm a dual UK/US citizen. I intend also applying for an Irish passport which requires me to send my UK passport through the post as a supporting document to verify my identity. The current estimated wait time is 2 months. I have no plans to return to the UK anytime soon but with elderly parents back home I can never rule out having to return at short notice. If my British passport is unavailable, is it likely to be a problem entering the UK with an American passport ? I know the US is strict about US citizens having to enter on a US passport but I'm not sure if the UK are more laid back about it. Thanks for any advice
I'm curious as to why you have to mail your UK passport for an Irish passport application. That doesn't sound like a good idea. Can't you submit a certified/notarized copy of your driving license?

I have 4 passports (Ireland, UK, Canada and US). I have used all of them to enter the UK at one point or another. Never had an issue.

Re: Entering the UK with a US passport
I do have reservations about sending my British passport but I have 2 middle names and usually drop one of them on forms etc due to lack of space. My passport is one of the few documents that has my name in full. It might not be an issue sending a copy of my driver's licence with one middle name missing but I'd rather send a document that I know will be accepted without question.

I would send birth cert and notarized copy of driving license. I would avoid sending in the UK passport if at all possible.

FYI, California notaries CANNOT certify copies of driver's licenses, passports, etc. See this article and citations therein.

No issues entering on a US passport when visiting, same as any other US citizen. More problematic if you intend to stay beyond six months or work.

Re: Entering the UK with a US passport
Why could you not work, especially if it was not for a UK employer?, even if you enter on a US passport. if you stayed beyond the entry given for US passport could be flagged as an overstay… but you would not really be one as a UKC.

So, the question is whether or not a Maryland notary can certify copies of documents? As per this website, apparently not.

Because you have no proof you are one. Declaring to immigration that you intend to work on a US passport with no visa is going to be a problem. Even if you use a ePassport gate to enter you won’t be able to pass a Right to Work check with a UK employer.

So the only document a UKC can use now to prove their right to work is a UK passport? And if they are working for their US employer remotely I doubt they would do the check.

They could also use their UK birth certificate together with a HMRC document listing their National Insurance number but someone returning from overseas is unlikely to have that. Working remotely is a separate issue.
