I don't think we have a drive in, Manhattan (they are in the suburbs) BUT we have a walk in and sit and picnic, I think there are tables too. This is at Bryant Park. Good place to visit when you come here, skating rink in winter now.

That's funny because in UK I had an instant hot water heater so never ran out of hot water, plus an electric shower so ditto. Here, we just have a tank (& they don't even have timers :curse: ) so the tank is hot alllll day long until someone takes a shower of more than 10 mins and then it's all gone.

We looked onto an instant hot water heater here but they don't seem to be big enough & the few plumbers we asked, didn't have a clue because they'd never installed them before.
I am trying to find an electric shower instead but again, no-one knows how to install it or where to buy one. I've asked at a few bathroom places and was told "They haven't even been invented" ROFL. I found one online but no point if no-one can install it, I guess.

Presuming you have a normal electric 30 or 40 gallon tank ...
if you are just getting one shower out of it ..then is is silted up and should replaced ASAP ... if you can fit it in... get a 50 gallon ..

get the installer to alter the temp from 125f to 140f ...

and install a clock on the system ...will save a fair bit ..

Thanks for the tips. I'm not sure what size it is, I will ask my DH. We have a lot of iron in the water so we do suspect some rust build up.
I definitely want a timer on the next one. Same with our furnace - there's no timer & that needs to change before next winter!

I'm not sure what you mean about a timer on the furnace. Perhaps a programmable thermostat? That turns the heat lower when noone is at home, and at night - or whenever you want.

Those are easy, I installed one myself a few years ago.

yeah that's what I meant. Brain was fried yesterday (monday, doncha know it?)
I've lived in 3 houses over here and none of them had them. We did install one easily in the last house but DH went to fit one here & the wiring in this house is a little odd to say the least so we didn't risk it LOL. Will get the sparky to do it when he adds the timer to the water heater.

Just wondering - re a timer on the water heater...

I've never heard of anyone doing that (not that you couldn't I'm sure). But I wonder if it might actually cost more to repeatedly heat up that much water, than to just maintain the temp?

I certainly don't know, but in some kinds of things, that can be the case.

A lot of people think that & it's false economy. Years ago, I had very hight elec bills & had someone come in and "audit my home". The biggest elec eater in the place was my water tank, always on hot. They explained it's like keeping your kettle full all day & constantly turning it on all day long with the plan of having a cup of tea at night.

The guy installed a timer on it - the only thing he really changed in my flat - and my elec bill dropped right away. I was pretty amazed by it actually.

Still would prefer an instant hot water heater though. Gas fired, turn water on, water runs through & heats up only what you need, instead of a whole tankful.
