In 1918 children would skip rope to the rhyme (Crawford):

I had a little bird,
Its name was Enza.
I opened the window,
And in-flu-enza.

I watched a really sad documentary about a year ago regarding the story of a man who was a boy when when he contracted it. He survived, but just as a shell and hasn't spoken since.

A flu pandemic is inevitable. It's just a case of when, what strain & how many will it kill this time round?

The news is good at doing things like that. Look at SARS. Wow, such an epidemic

I was around for the 1957 "Asian flu". I was in the army in Germany. We had 50% casualties to flu, we had to vacate buildings so they could be used as hospital wards. The 1957 flu was a virus that combined parts of a bird flu with parts of a human flu; that meant that we had some resistance. The 1918 flu was a total bird flu that mutated to the point that it could jump from human to human. Humans had no built in resistance to it. Whether the next one is like the '18 or the '57 versions, it will spread more quickly because more people travel now. Take your choice.

I know....

My husband and I were talking about this last night, and his reply was "consider where its coming from," when I suggested scaremongering.

I know you're hoping, but then think again, that would cut down on target practice.

The US media does a great job of scaremongering. The BBC does not usually engage in such activities, but it was still reported. There is a credible threat and it is the media's duty to report it. It is for the audience to think for themselves decide what to make of it. Sometimes it is nothing, but you would be upset if it was a big deal and no one reported it. Remember this:

My mum was also taken very ill and ended up in hospital at round the same time...shes not had the flu since......
I was ill with the flu and nearly died at aged around 9.....also in 1999 I got the FL from a lady I looked after who just got back for Hong Kong......I was very sick for 8 weeks after that.....it took me months more to get over it..........but I've not had the flu since.....
I would lose weeks off of school from the flu....I never went to a school Christmas party because of it............
