Does anyone on here know of any good deals.
Back in England we can let credit run out and buy more when we want.
I have yet to find a cell phone provider here that lets you do that.
I only have a phone for emergencies.Its hardly ever on.
But i put credit on it every 3 months. $25.
But if you dont add more you lose it all. This is stupid,its just going to keep rising.

Whats the best plan .

Dunno I have some sort of plan with Verizon. I keep meaning to change it but just don't get round to it. I have seen phones advertised on HSN TV that are pay as you go ones, you could check their website. I have a UK cell phone and the card expires after 6 mths it costs 10 GBP min. per card. I think Virgin sell a pay as you go phone but I think there is a daily charge whether or not you use the phone.

You can get pay as you go cell phones in the US I've seen them advertised (I just couldn't tell you from where!)

.... Except, as Unicorn said, the minutes don't last. For example, if you buy 30 minutes they typically expire after 30 days. The best deal I ever found when I was PAYGing was 250-300 minutes that lasted 365 days.

I have a Tracfone for exactly the same purpose (emergency only). It came with 365 days, and double minutes if I ever added minutes (which I didn't; still have about 200 mins left of the 250 I bought 8 mths ago). They have specials on now and again - take a look at their Web site.

I had the Tracfone as well but changed it to the VirginMobile.
Same idea and you can carry on your minutes each month.
Great to have as an emergency phone.

We have two Virgin Mobile phones too. There's a minimum $15 every 3 months, but unused minutes carry over so long as you keep your account active. Seems to me that $60/year for an emergency phone isn't too bad a deal, and you can pick up their cheapest phone for around $35.

Should also add - check their coverage (whoever you consider going with). I was going to get a T-Mobile phone until I realized they don't have coverage in eastern NC!

Tmobile, has wonderful pay as you go, i havent had it for over a year (had one, when i was back and forth visiting hubby or bf at the time). Put minimum amount of mins on as i needed them and they lasted for a year every time i added. Don't know if it's still the same, but would recommend that pay as you go service to anyone. Also unlike a bunch of other pay as go plans, it goes by minutes and not connection charges or per min charges.

The same here. My Virgin Mobile only costs me $15 per 3 months and it has quite decent coverage, even in our small town.

I can happily report that I had an emergency last night (not a drill) and that my cell phone worked wonderfully (it was the source of the emergency). The firefighters report, in part, reads: "Occupier dropped cell phone in sink and applied water to the sink causing water ingress into the battery compartment of said cell phone. The owner of the cell phone, having noticed that his/her cell phone was immersed in water took the cell phone out of the water and placed it in an electric toaster. After two rounds of drying out the cell phone, the owner (on his 3rd round of Scott's marmalade covered toast) noticed that his/her cell phone was on fire, the batteries having exploded their caustic contents on a round of toast, which the owner did eat not realizing what he/she was in fact eating. After putting out the fire, it seems that the kitchen area is in pretty good condition, and with a lick of paint will be in ship-shape condition for the next occupant. Sadly, the same can't be said for the owner/renter who suffered extensive injuries to the lining of his oesophagus and stomach. Let this be a lesson to you all, don't multi-task with your cell phone.

I think I'm right in saying that any phone will dial 911 even if the plan has expired so you could get the cheapest pay as you go phone and not top it up and it would still be good for 911.

You are correct. I have read the advice to keep an old, no longer used cell phone plus its car charger in the glove box or trunk, then you could plug it in and use to call 911 in case of emergency.
