Electronic Filing of Taxes
Visited our CPA this morning to drop off all the tax paperwork, and he said something strange to what I've heard people say in the past.
This is the first year all of our UK income has been exempt from UK tax, and only taxable in the US. As the UK tax year differs from the US one we have no paperwork to support what I state as our UK earnings for 2010 US tax year. For this reason he said our Federal tax return cannot be filed electronically, but must be a paper return. There must be members of BE in a similar position who use say Turbo Tax or one of the other DIY programs and send that in electronically. I'm concerned a paper return will stand out from the normal and is more likely at attract an audit. |

I don't know about that - I always do our taxes the old-fashioned way and send in a paper return. I never send in any paperwork to support foreign earnings, since I don't really have any paperwork (and the IRS don't request any.) They haven't audited us (yet.)

Call me sceptical that it has to be filed manually. Essentially, you need to be able to back up your return with paperwork regardless of how it's filed, in case you get audited down the road. I wonder whether something else is going on here... was the CPA going to file this electronically for you? I wonder whether, absent paperwork for this, he simply doesn't want to countersign your return and will just hand you paper copies of the return for you to file yourself?
It made me wonder because there must be people on here who have UK income and no W2, or whatever the form is you get sent each year in the US, to back up their figures. So how can they file electronically, and I believe people do with no problems. |

I have the paperwork to back it up. Bank statements showing the amounts paid into my UK bank from each source. This has only occurred this year, because in the past it was only my UK government service pension and that didn't get shown on the 1040. This year it does, plus an annuity I've got and two pensions my wife now receives from the UK, all free of UK tax.

If it makes you feel any better, DH never has any paperwork from Canada supporting his retirement benefits and pension and we've been fine for all of the last 12 years.
