Early US Spin

Seems that US history was spin doctoring all the way back in the revolution. An oft quoted line turns out to have been invented.

I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.
(Attributed)
~~ Nathan Hale

It is the duty of every good officer to obey any orders given him by his commander-in-chief.
(Actual)
Shot by British as a spy.
~~ Nathan Hale, American hero, d. 1776

What's your source? Nathan Hale was hanged, not shot. The hanging took place on Manhattan Island in Turtle Bay, near today's United Nations headquarters. Read into that what you will.

Hardly. After uttering the statement ("I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death."), Henry mobilized the militia (ordinary citizens with guns) to force restitution of the powder removed from the Richmond magazine by Lord Dunmore, the royal governor of Virginia.

Most quotations are manufactured by historians. History is just lies agreed upon.
