Default EAD SSN and working

I have several questions which I hope I can get an answer to.

Firstly, I got my EAD today at the Oklahoma City office, upon getting it home and checking it I noticed that they had got by date of birth wrong by 2 years, is this a major problem? Do I need a new EAD and will I have to pay for it, how long will it take to get a new one and how do I do it?

Secondly, I came across the usual SSN problem, and was told it takes up to 30 days to get one whilst they check. Does anybody have any idea if this is the case or has anybody got one faster?

Is it possible to work without an SSN temporarily if I have applied for one and simply hand my employer the number when it arrives?
