A friend of mine has asked me to bring home the Lost series on DVD. Question is will the DVD's work on UK DVD players?

Yes -- unless you know a local nerd. Really quite complicated to do it from scratch if you've not done it before on your computer -- er...allegedly!

or you could take her a DVD player from here as a gift; multiregion one as discussed in the above thread... only 30$!! she would just need to address the plug/current issue

Or you could lend her camcorder when you visit the UK, bring it back to the States, play the DVD on your television while taping it with your friends camcorder, mail the camcorder and tape back to your friend............ or wait until next time you go to the UK and return it in person, which will save on postage
