DVD player

Hope this is the right section to post this!!

Can anyone recommend a DVD player that will play PAL DVD's. I have just been given 2 DVD's of Footballers Wives from UK and can not play the darned things :(

Cheers

We have three cyberhome dvd's and several of our friends have bought them. With a simple modification they will play all region dvd's and are very cheap.

(Switch player on and make sure there is no disc in the tray.
Close tray and press menu,1,9.

A menu should appear with the region option at about the third line from the bottom. Press enter and enter the region you want("0" for free zone) . Next press open/close. )

I bought one at Walmart for $47 and two at Sams Club for $39 - you can now buy them at Best Buy as well apparently.

It is a cyberhome CH 300 DVD - just google it and see what you come up with in your area.

How do you get past the PAL/NTSC problem when watching R2 DVD's? I asked because I would love to be able to buy a load of DVD's from the later series of Only Fools & Horses on my next trip back home later this year.

I have no idea how you get past it. I simply plugged the lead from my dvd player to my telly and did the region free jiggery pokery and voila, no problems.

I'd brought quite a few dvd's from the UK with me and bought several more and both those and the ones I buy here work fine.

You'd have to ask someone a bit more tech savvie than me to get a proper answer :)

Try searching for mutiregion DVD players on this forum. YOu should find several threads offering advice, links to DVD hacking sites and places where you can buy codefree mutiregion players.

I have a phillips DVD-728, it plays all regions straight out of the box and can convert PAL to NTSC so it hooks straight into a US telly. It cost about $50 from Best Buy

There
is no PAL/NTSC issue - a DVD is a DVD is a DVD, with only
region codes to get in the way of watching a British DVD on a NTSC TV
in America.

Err.. who told you that?

For example:
UK DVDs are encoded with PAL and locked to Region 2.
US DVDs are encoded with NTSC and locked to Region 1.
Japanese DVDs are encoded with NTSC and locked to Region 2.
Australian DVDs are encoded with PAL and locked to Region 4.

(Yes, I know there are exceptions to these rules)

The stupid thing is that I can play my Aussie DVD's on the player that I can not play the Brit ones on...go figure :(

There are 2 distinct issues with DVD's from other countries,

1) The region coding of the disk, 1 to 6. Most standard DVD players are locked to one region. If you want to play UK disks on a USA player then you need a multi-region capable player.

2)The format of the DVD, Most standard players will only play one format, either PAL or NTSC or SECAM. UK disks are PAL format. USA equipment is NTSC. If you want to play UK DVD’s on a USA NTSC TV then you need some sort of PAL to NTSC converter.

Your best option is to buy a multi-region DVD player with PAL to NTSC conversion capabilities. The one I have is the Philips DVD-726
