Re: Duvet Covers?

I hate duvets/comforters. I don't use them on the bed because I find them far to warm. While I admit when I was in Germany 3 years ago, that was all that was offered as bed linens and so, of course, that is what we had to use. I was most uncomfortable without a top sheet and only the duvet as a cover. Thankfully, my German aunt had a closet full of lovely bed linens which included blankets and I took them all home with me after cleaning out her apartment. I use the lightweight blanket summer, winter, fall and spring. It is perfect for my needs. My duvet/comforter has been in my storage unit for the last ten years. It is goose down, light and fluffy but far too warm for us.

Damn this thread - i'd just been thinking I needed a better "doona" as we call duvets in Australia. Someone posted a link to Overstock - so last night I ended up buying a new duvet and cover. Heh. Expensive thread-reading for me!

My OH fell in love with duvets when we went to the UK. We've had one for over 6 years and he is still amazed by it.

Yeah, it's like everything at IKEA: it's not garbage, and if you treat it well and don't expect too much, they'll do fine, and after all, you didn't spend that much on it to start with. I actually quite like linens to be "hard" so I get a head start with IKEA's stuff.

LL Bean has really nice bedding that's not too expensive, they have comforters and covers:

Restoration Hardware has really nice bedding:

The Company Store is probably the best option, they have matching comforter covers for all of their sheets, hundreds of options. I've used them several times and their stuff is top quality for not much money:

Oh, I love comforters, they are so much easier to wash and I used to hate having to wash duvet covers and get myself all twisted up putting it back on!

I've found Target's fabric based products such as sheets and towels to be inferior quality.

I've not actually bought a duvet cover in the US because I have UK size duvets. I bought the covers in the UK.

Comforters - yuck! I did buy one a few years ago when I first arrived to use on rare occasions when we had teenagers sleeping over and when they wanted to sleep on the sofa bed in the basement. It's a Ralph Lauren comforter with a tartan design. It's not the kind where you can put a different duvet cover on (boring) and worse, it doesn't have any down in it so although it is heavy in weight, it's not warm and soft enough to wrap oneself in and feel comfy in. ('Comforter' seems to be an oxymoron in this sense).

I always have a topsheet between the duvet cover and bottom sheet...the duvet cover stays cleaner for a bit longer.

The best way to put a duvet cover on is to wash it inside out (sometimes I iron them, sometimes not - depending how creased it gets in my top loader). I then put it on the duvet inside out by putting my arms up inside the cover and grabbing the corners. I then grab the corresponding corners of the duvet and shake down the duvet cover, turning it indside out (ie. rightside in) as the cover moves down the duvet. Easy peasy and takes just a few seconds. :)

Also look at Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_g...keywords=duvet, they even call them duvet {covers} and are often on sale.

I can't believe I'm getting into this conversation but...

For some reason the down comforters (duvets) have started multiplying around here the past few years (it's not like you throw them OUT is it?). We've put one underneath the mattress pad + bottom sheet for the winter for a featherbed type effect. Very cozy. :)

For anyone going shopping, duvet and duvet cover are used almost interchangeably here. If it's success you're after (instead of being right) use both/either when asking in stores. Or, spell it out if they don't know what you're talking about: "a washable cover for a down comforter".

Just bought a nice big king-size bed from Ikea, but I don't feel like going all the way back there just for the duvet cover.... :s

My best friend used to buy me cheap cotton duvet sets from TK Maxx in the UK and bring them with her - we when for white plus a bit of pattern. Utterly at her taste but it worked very well in the end.
Then she moved to New Zealand!

Be thankful you weren't trying to buy one 10 years ago... they really were non-existent then.

My local Macy's or Bloomies now has endless duvets but I'm still not impressed with the covers available. They range from cheap, ugly and thin to more acceptable (still thin) but costing more than the damn duvet itself. I ended up buying a cover and pillow cases in London.
