dual UK/USA citizen travelling on a british passport out and back into USA
hi all
ok, this is a tough one, but can anyone help me out?
i applied for my n-400 naturalization recently and received it quicker than planned for, took less than 2 months, even had the swearing in ceremony same day, hey, i'm not complaining!
BUT!! my wife booked a trip to costa rica a few weeks before the interview thinking that it would take months for me to becoem an american and get a new US passport.
so now i'm a US citizen, great, but i don't yet have a US passport, and nor do I have my green card ('cos i'm no longer a resident)
so, can i leave the US and return on my british passport and show immigration my naturalization certificate? (which would prolly really pee off immigration)
thanks, anyone, for your help.

Don't do it. You don't want your first act as a US citizen to be breaking the law.
You can get your passport in a day. Yea, they have a service for just this sort of thing. It probably takes a bit longer, but look up "Passport Expediters" on the net and you'll find dozens of listings and step by step instructions.
Check out the sites and get on the move to the Post Office. You can have it in no time...

you've got to use a US passport to leave and enter the US as a USC...so either cancel the trip, or get the passport pronto....though you might get more advice in the US visas section of the forums

but you need to tell my wife that! she thinks that i can somehow circumnavigate immigration or get a passprt in a few days! usps told me that it takes 3 weeks for an expedited passport and very rarely comes within 7 days.

It's Thursday, about 5. The last fedex /USPS overnight is probably at 7:00 if you have a major airport nearby. You could get it out today and have your passport by next week.

It's not clear when you're leaving for Costa Rica. You must use a US passport when leaving or entering the US. Pay for expedited processing for a US passport. If you're departure date is less than say two weeks away, I would change the date of your departure.
I'm not sure how long expedited processing takes. Please check the relevant US government website for processing times.

I used a service and got mine in 4 days once. A. Briggs Passport or something like that. USPS tells you that because they don't like the hassle methinks..
It's Thursday, about 5. The last fedex /USPS overnight is probably at 7:00 if you have a major airport nearby. You could get it out today and have your passport by next week.

You might be SOL though, they offer a same day service but I just found this on their website.
NOTE: The U.S. Passport Agency has been backlogged for over a month because of the new law requiring a passport for flights to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. Because of this backlog, the Passport Agency in some cases has been taking longer than in the past to issue passports. Consequently, we may not be able to provide passport service as quickly as you request. We make every effort to meet our customer’s request for the timely issuance of their passports, however in a few cases applicants have not had their passports in time for their departure.
Current orders of A Briggs are being handled to the best of our abilities; however, we can only wait on the Passport Agency to issue passports, and reportedly they have been behind in issuances by as much as one million passports. This is a problem being experienced by everyone in our industry. The U.S. Passport Agency is doing all it can to solve the problem. If you have specific questions, contact [email protected] . If you are an A Briggs corporate or travel agency account, your service will not change. Please contact your account representative if you have questions.

All I know is that I've been waiting five weeks for my expedited passport. (The check was, of course, cashed over a month ago.)

You're welcome. But it doesn't appear to be down to the service you use, rather the backlog at the passport office.
