There is an article in today's Vancouver paper about the concerns here regarding the drought in California and raising food prices because of it.

We rely heavily on the US for our food now and food security. 67% of our fruits and vegetables come from the US with about 1/2 of that being from California.

Broccoli which California apparently grows 95% of US supply has sky rocketed, could get it 99 cents a pound last year, not paying a 2.29 a pound, sometimes as high as 2.50 per pound.

Had to go back to imported Chinese frozen veggies.

California drought pushes local food prices higher (with video)

What is it about Americans and broccoli?

If I never ate broccoli again in my life, it wouldn't concern me.

Yeah, but peas actually taste good. Moreover, the best, fresh peas taste sweet, which I would have thought would appeal to the American palate more than mutant cabbage flower buds.

It's very good for you though...

The one I can't eat is celery.

No clue. It's not my favorite (well veggies in general I find gross but some tolerable) but its tolerable and apparently healthy so I eat, plus despite the price going up, it's still one of the cheapest vegetable to buy so easy and cheap way to get veggies.

Asparagus is my favorite but it's crazy expensive 3-4 bucks a pound, so its a treat not a regular item.
