Default driving in the US

Hey all

I am about to move to the US for a couple of years, have all the difficult things like Visa sorted however am worried about being able to drive!

I have not got a UK driving license, as with being in University I never got around to taking it/or being able to afford it, though I am by no means a learner as I have had lessons with both instructors and family.

What I wanted to know, and i've searched the internet to no avail, is..... can I apply for and take my US driving license whilst over there, so I will at least be able to drive whilst I am out there??????

Thanks in advance!

IME, an inability to drive does not preclude issuance of a license in any State. Licenses are only issued for Walmart cashiers to thoroughly check the bona fide status of your Visa credit card.

Not only can can you but it is also, to use Mancunian vernacular 'a piece of piss mate!!!' I had never drove in my life and, aged 37, got my drivers licence here in Michigan after driving around our apartment complex for three weeks in a bleedin blizzard!!!

When I get home of course I will have to learn to drive a manual car or me mates will call me a big girls jumper but I think I am up to it.

Any other questions you can think of about life in the US just ask. We will all scare the living shit out of you but we will be mostly joking

It depends what state you go to ...... If it's Vermont the test consists of ...

Examiner .... "How many wheels does your car have ?"
Driver ........ "Four"
Examiner .... "You passed"

They don't have spares in Vermont ..... they just run with flat tyres trying to figure out why it feels funny, at average speeds of 25 mph it doesn't matter and when they do have to stop they just stand and scratch their asses wondering why its only flat at the bottom

And what happens if you have both the spare and the one round the middle? Would that make 7 or 8?

I failed my VT license the first time-took the test in January in my Mom's VW. Trying to drive on ice while having to stop on a hill and then start again didn't go too well.

It is at least a helluva lot more detailed then the driving test here in GA Patrick..... They don't use turn signals here.
