Driving in NYC

I apologize before I start as I know this subject has been discussed endlessly but could someone please tell me in straightforward terms what we have to do.

We are moving to New York with my husbands job - he has a L1 visa (I have L2). Currently we have both driven in the UK for 20+ years.
For how long will we be able to drive using our UK licences? If we hire a car (initially) what will happen re insurance?

Thanks.

I think this pretty much explains it http://britishexpats.com/forum/showthread.php?t=632273

Insurance shouldn't be an issue with a hire car, you just need to pay them. :D
