Default Driving in Michigan

Hi,

struggling to work out the logistics of getting a MI driving license, the Department of State website is a little bit vague on foreign drivers. My husband and i have UK licenses and have applied for an international driving permit. I understand that we can drive on these for 30 days... is that right?

Which tests will we need to do - written and practical?

I will be on an L2 visa - i've read a couple of posts on here which suggest that people had issues doing the test without their EAD or an SSN. Will i be able to do the test as soon as i arrive? Will my husband be able to take it without his SSN?

We will have a hire car booked for the first 2 weeks and have a car due to be delivered after that. Will we be able to register or insure the car without a license or do we need to be certain to have the test done before that?

So many questions...

Hi

I took my test in MI 10 years ago so things might have changed since then, but we never bothered about the international permit, just used our UK license for the first few days. I didn't have an EAD or SSN and they accepted my passport as proof of ID.
I took the written test first (multiple choice, piece of cake) and then the driving test, piece of cake.
Like I said, this was 10 years ago so rules might have changed.

Since 9/11 many states (if not all) have tightened up on security as far as driving licences are concerned.

Well, TX I can understand... but MI doesn't generally get a slew of illegal Canadians descending upon them!

I took my test 7 years ago, as I remember it I had to prove my residency (had to take visa in) took a mutliple choice question test and a driving test... very easy.

Where in MI are you?

It's not the Canadians coming over the border illegally that the BPs worry about...you'd be suprised how many other nationalities try to get over via Canada

Nowhere, yet - moving over in July/August... probably around the Waterford area.

here is the list of documents you will need to present to obtain a licence in Michigan on top of passing the driving test

http://michigan.gov/documents/DE40_032001_20459_7.pdf

1. A valid Social Security number or proof of ineligibility.
2. Legal presence in the U.S.
3. Identity.
4. Michigan residency (at least two documents are required).
