Does anybode hace experience related to California Driving License Renewal by internet?

When visiting two DMV offices in California I got two contradictory answers:
a) I can renew my driving license within 1 month before expiration date and 1 month after expiration date.
b) I can renew my driving license within 2 months before expiration date and 2 months after expiration date.

Question 1: What is correct, a) or b)?

I assumed I need to apply for 'Renewal Identification Number' online.
However, I heared that 'Renewal Notice' will be sent automatically by post, 2 months before expiration date.

Question 2: Which of this is correct?

Once I get 'Renewal Identification Number' I assume I can apply for the renewed driving license online.

Question 3: Am I right?

Your help would be highly appreciated.

They'll send you a renewal letter which will tell you whether or not you can renew online.

Whether or not you can may depend on your immigration status (eg H1b husband could, poor H4 wifey could not............ though I would not imagine for a moment that this is handled consistently...)
