Default Driving License Info - CA

Since I asked the license plate question some time ago here is the answer if anyone needs it:

Yes, you can take the driving test in a car without license plates as long as it is new but the plates have not yet been received. Naturally, you still need a valid insurance certificate and I took, but didn't get asked for, a proof of purchase.

Brand new or just new to you?! I've just bought a second hand car without plates (previous owner had a personalized plate), plates should be here within a week, but was thinking of doing the driving part of my test before then if I can get an appointment.

Brand new. I called the DMV and asked before I booked the test. Note that I have been waiting 8 weeks for the plates!

I think "new to you" will qualify, too, but in most cases in CA a car will retain its plates. The exception is if the PO had a personalised plate on it and keeps it, or if you bought the car out of state.
