Default Driving licence help

We used to live in NJ and got driving licences there. Because we were 'resident aliens', the licences were only valid for a year at a time and we had to renew them every year and show that we were still legally resident in the US. We came back to UK and the licences have since expired. Now we're moving to NY and trying to figure out how we can get NY licences without having to take a test again. NY state recognises out of state licences which expired less than a year ago, not the case for us. We can only renew our NJ licence with proof of an NJ address. Otherwise, NY state requires a written test, 5 hours of driving lessons and a practical So flipping annoying. Anyway round this? ANyone BTDT?

If NY require a out of state license to be within a year to exchange, then that's what it is.

You'll have to redo the test from scratch, but if you check on their DMV site, see if you can get out of doing the drivers ed portion as a previously licensed driver.

My husband & I had to do the whole kit & kaboodle, had to take 8 hours of drivers dducation, as well as the paper & on-road tests. This is for CT, not NY, & we had been out of the US for 20 years. Each state has its own rules--some states are easy-going, but some are surprisingly strict.

We gathered up all our evidence of driving in both UK & US (old expired US licences, up-to-date UK licence, Uk insurance records, etc.) & went to the DMV to see if we could get out of the drivers ed course. Unfortunately we couldn't. I hope you can, but it's up to your DMV rules.

While we were working on the requirements for the drivers licence we could apply for & receive a photo state ID card that is similar to a DL & can be used for ID & residence proof. We had to bring in various specific proofs of our state address. So those ID cards were useful in the beginning, then when we passed all our tests, those cards were exchanged for the full drivers licences.
