Default drivers license question

Greetings all, no doubt this was covered, but I missed it. Question:

My wife is Chinese, and I have submitted all the forms and assorted
documents for her AOS and EAD. (Haven't received any notice they have
accepted the docs, other then the mail reciept)

My wife wants to learn to drive, and I was wondering what the laws are
for applying for a license? We're in NH. I'm also planning to send her
to driving school rather then try and teach her myself. I went through
that with my sister, and that was enough for me,
thank you very much. 8-}

Queue amusing anecdote:

My wife got behind the wheel for the first time in her life earlier
this week. I am happy to say that the wife, husband, jeep and parents
house all survived the experience. ;)

My parents have a long driveway that is perfect for a first time
driver. Both my niece and nephew started there. Yes, she forgot about
the brakes and almost plowed into their garage. I had my hand on the
parking brake the whole time, "Just in case".

Hi Ned,

Go to http://www.nh.gov/safety/dmv/driverlic/answers.html and read what is required to show them in order to get a driver permit. Every state is different in that regard.

Best Wishes,
Rene

Hi:

What about the clutch? As far as I am concerned, you haven't taught anyone to drive until it is to drive a stick shift -- in San Francisco. [Apologies to Bill Cosby -- but his "Driving in San Francisco" sketch was so right on the money].

And of course in the UK if you take your driving test in an automatic all you are allowed to drive are automatics. If you take your test in a manual (stick/standard) you are then licensed to drive anything.

Hi:

With the advent of "SMG" transmissions, how do they define what is a "stick" -- the foot operated clutch would be the differentiation, I guess.

Due to the RHD, I've always rented automatics. I'm informed that its easy to spot expats in the UK who own stick shift cars -- they can't maintain a manicure on their right hand!

Hi:

Watch the manicure on your LEFT hand. Although you say the steering wheel is on the worng side, in the US we do drive on the RIGHT side.

BTW, I used to work for a native of South Africa -- he said that after 10 years he still had trouble backing out of his driveway, otherwise, no problem.

Yes they were, and they came back to continue their attacks on
Americans by causing them to become Chinese cab drivers. <grin>
(My wife agrees with this sentiment)

Standard transmissions are on the agenda. First will be getting her
comfortable with an automatic, then I'll borrow my sister's car and
teach her how to use a standard.

If course my brother has a commercial licence. Perhaps I'll have him
teach her how to double clutch a semi. :)
