Default Driver's License Problems for Out of Status Persons

My dear friend is loosing his drivers license because under new laws
the Dept. of Motor Vehicles is requiring a social security number.

The MAIN question:
Does anyone know if there is a way of keeping the license?

JUST some notes:
My friend came here from central america with the dream of becoming a
citizen. He came here after graduating college, and learining to speak
english fluently. He is an honest, hardworking, and good person. His
visitor's visa expired 10 years ago, and the USA is the only place he
calls home. I fear he may become a man without a country. He would
fight and die for this country. It is sad that Lady Liberty doesn't
have a place for him.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Depends on the state...but it's legal status that is important, because H4's can't work or get SSN, but can get drivers license...so if your mates illegal, he's kinda SOL...

You friend may be all of the nice things you said about him. However, he cannot obtain a social security card without legal status. The fact that he overstayed his visitor's visa by nearly ten years means if he is discovered and removed from the US he would be banned from return.

Ten years ago he could have gotten a social security card without any legal status in the US. They were giving them out without any records from CIS. Now, as Bob said, he is SOL.

He rolled the dice and lost. Better smarts next time!

Lady Liberty cannot tolerate illegal things. Liberty without laws is
nothing but anarchy...

If he had wanted to be a Citizen, then he would have had to come here on a Immigrant visa, not a Visitors visa.

And if he had done so, he would have been a Citizen a long time ago.

I don't see how someone can be "honest" yet violate our laws for more than a decade.

As for his dream... I too have a dream.... and he's not in it.

I read that with the 'Real ID' law coming in, at least some states were
looking at creating a class of driver's licence that those without proper
legal residency could still get. This would not be of any use when boarding
flights or other things that require photo ID, but would at least allow them
to drive legally. Not sure which states are looking at doing this...
