Get a SSN and not drive till you do?

Depends on your state really what the requirements are, so no one can really tell you can they without more info.

Shouldn't need a SSN - proof of legal status will suffice in most states.

Though DVD officials often have to be persuaded of this.

The information will be on the website of the state's DVD.

If you don't have a SSN, how did you get the license you currently have?

I think big changes are coming up in the DMV for all State..
The 2007 USCIS budget:

Discretionary funding of $134.9 million is requested for the cost:
(1) to operate an expanded Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) program to meet the new requirements of the REAL ID Act for USCIS to provide the various State departments of motors vehicles with immigration status information

(sigh)

Why don't they simply teach the DMV officials how to check the visas that are issued by their own government?

Airline check-in staff can do it, FFS...
