Driver's Licence in Idaho
Well shoot, I called the DMV in Idaho about the requirements for my
driver's licence and they tell me I need to do a road test in addition
to a written test. Twenty-six years driving experience in Canada,
this sucks. I think the last time I parallel parked was 26 years ago
when I initially got my Ontario driver's licence. Tried a few times
after that and was not successful. Oh well, guess I better get off
the computer and get practicing. Thought I'd share.

same here in Michigan ..... for some reason Germans dont have to do the road
test no idea why they get away with it

Because the quality of driving in Germany is higher than in the US? I've
lived in several eastern US states and the driving (especially around
washington, dc) is horrible.

Because the quality of driving in Germany is higher than in the US? I've
lived in several eastern US states and the driving (especially around
washington, dc) is horrible.

Reading my driver's licence manual for Idaho, I will still be able to
keep my Ontario driver's licence. I just can't use it when I'm issued
an Idaho one. By the way when I had to present my Ontario driver's
licence for performing certain transactions here, a few people
remarked on how pretty the flower was on my driver's licence. The
provincial flower being the trillium. Also said our driver's licences
were more attractive than the Idaho ones.

Same here in KY, except I had to hold a permit for 30 days. Funny
though my international license was still legal so drove the whole
time on my permit with no one sitting beside me!! Yes hate the paralel
parking was my greatest fear and yes had to do it in the test passed
with flying colors!!

In Oklahoma all I had to do was exchange my Ontario drivers license for an
Oklahoma one. I found it amusing that some guy from Georgia had to take all
the driving tests to get his Oklahoma license and I didn't (well I had to
take a quick vision test).
I've received many nice comments regarding the Ontario drivers license as
well, most of them about how advanced it is compared to the Oklahoma license
(Oklahoma still uses the "old style" laminated (IE - anyone with a computer
can duplicate) card license.
Oklahoma did not allow me to keep my Ontario license. When I added my name
to the car insurance, I had to call the Tag agency back because I needed my
Ontario drivers license number. Apparently state farm required that I
supply them with this, which is a good thing as I did not have to start out
as a new driver in the US and had a "fairly" good record in Canada.

I just had the computer test as the first part of my licence in Virginia, at 52 year of age and with 35 years driving experience !!
I have to hold a learners permit for 30 days before I can drive on my own.Although my UK one is still OK.
apparently they hold it in the car park at the back of the DMV
Just a word of advice (and caution). You can go onto the DMV web site www.dmvnow.com and take sample tests.
I found this easier than studying the booklet I had.
After a while the tests became easier and easier until I was getting 100% each time.
On the day, I took my turn and stood by the computer and up came the questions !!!!!
Most of them were far harder and more complicated than the samples on the dmv web site.
Having said that MOST of them were basic common sense
(they had to be because I guessed several of them)
In Virginia and probably similar elsewhere, you get 10 mutiple choice questions on road signs. You have to get all 10 right to go through the second round !
Then you get 25 questions (again 4 choices for each) on safety regulations and general rules and laws.
you have to get 20 of those right.
I scraped through that then had my eyes tested (the O looked remarkably like a Q !!) and then had my picture taken.
5 minutes later I received a laminated card with my picture on it and can go back in 30 days for the driving bit.
All I have to do now is parallel park a card with a steering wheel on the other side.
Side-swiping is a word that springs to mind

He-he. I know what you mean. What bothered me before the test was that the

parking in congested side streets in the southern UK urbs, where I was lucky
if I had 9 inches space at front/rear when I parked in the evening and
where, if you didn't park 1 inch from the kerb your wing-mirror would be
zapped by morning. It would have been much easier to take the Texas driving
test in a pickup but I didn't have one to hand. I passed anyway - the
instructor didn't even give me time to stop & straighten up after reversing
in, he just said 'ok, that's fine'. I did take some time at the w/ends to
go around to the test center & find their parking space, and get some test
runs, that was a great help. Good luck.

Im really ticked :-)
I have had my UK Driving licences for both the Bike and the Car for 25+
years for both vehicles. In that time I have had minor speeding tickets, one
accident in the car and nothing to speak of on the bike.
Virginia wont take anything into consideration and I have to take all my
tests again too .. I can drive for 1 month on my UK licences however.. but I
too have to retake the lot.. I have also built up a resonable no claims
bonus on the car and bike and have certificates for that and am keeping
fingers crossed that the insurance co's will take that into account.

Same situation here in California except that you only get 10 days,
not a month. I had to do a written test (36 out of 36 - smartarse) and
a driving test which took all of 15 minutes.
As far as insurance going, the AAA office near San Jose said my UK
driving record and no claims were irrelevant. When we moved down to
Riverside, the agent at the AAA there said that it was relevant and
managed to knock off $700 from the years insurance. The moral I guess
is don't take the first answer you get and find an agent who is
willing to do a little work.

Thats really the information I need.. Im am totally amazed at the cos of the
insurance over there. Hopefully I will be able to lower my fiancée's premium
by either being added as a named driver or reversing that Idea and taking a
policy out and putting her on as named driver.. Hmm
