Default At The Drive In

Is there a drive in movie theater (I hate misspelling) near you ?

One of the things I wanted to do when moving to the U.S of A was to go to a drive in, but they don't seem to exist anymore.
The nearest one to me is over 70 miles away.

When we were in Blighty we always saw movies or TV shows with people at the drive in and always wondered what it was actually like, but doesn't look like I'll experience it myself.

Other American things I want to do: Go to an NFL game and a Major League baseball game. (I'm a bit sports mad)

When first in the states, there were two drive in theatre's within 20 miles...went to one of them a couple times, was a great laugh, $7 a car, not bad for two people, and it was a double bill, they usually do a kids m,ovie and then an adults movie afterwards, went to see Finding Nemo...lot of fun, bit cheesy...some people were really serious, had extra speakers hooked up to the stereo and lounge chairs in the back of pick ups etc and cases of beer

Yes, there is one on the Tempe/Scottsdale Border. Passed it a few weeks back while they were showing a movie. Place was empty.

Seen the Detroit Lions and Redwings in action but have not been to a Baseball game. Next door neighbours daughter works for the Atlanta Braves and does get 'freebies' so it may happen yet. A wonderful experience but I would not make it a habit.

There is a drive in out in the sticks not too far from Tampa, never been to it yet, but might give it a try soon before the weather kicks in, going in the middle of summer wouldnt be too much fun I should imagine

There is an old drive in movie theater in Durham, NC called the Starlite. Unfortuantely, there was a fire about 8 months ago and the screen burned down. The owner didn't have insurance for the screen. Don't know when they'll be back in business but the drive in also has a gun shop attached...

Here's some pics of the Starlite:

Its called tailgating, Bob. We had a lovely one here on Long Island, the last of its bred, in Westbury. It closed down a few years ago and is sorely missed. Whenever we went it was packed.

so was the one we went to...but then that one didn't have any competition, there wasn't a cinema for 20 miles in any direction...did well when open in the summer
The other place wasn't bad either, they had a couple screens, huge...but didn't like the drive there as much.

Anyway, if interested, somewhere near sabago, past casco lake, and the other one is just a bit past windham, towards portland.
There's also another one near skowhegan, apparantly...

In my experience getting tickets for an NFL game is either extremely difficult or totally impossible, depending on the team you want to see. I've been to one NFL game (Steelers v Patriots) a few years ago, but only because we knew somebody with season tickets. I was watching a Green Bay Packers game on Monday night football a couple of months back and they said that the bloke currently No.1 on the waiting list for Packers season tickets joined the list in 1970.

Baseball's another matter - I've been to quite a few games (Red Sox, Yankees, Mets) and getting tickets for anything except a pennant or world series game is fairly straightforward. We even saw the Yankees play for $8 each last season. It was, however, in the bleachers and we had to listen to the Yankees fans around us singing about the Red Sox being faggots all the way through, even though the Yankees were playing the Colorado Rockies at the time.

Those days are near gone. I can remember going to the drive in when I was little. My Grandma worked there so I got in for free It was great fun. Nowadays, there aren't any around here...I did see one once in Indiana. Can't remember what town it was in though.

There is one near us, about 25 miles up the road.

$14 for a car full. I think it's cool.

drink your own pop and smoke ciggies.
