Drinks on Planes

I'm flying back to the UK tomorrow and I am a nervous flyer. I used to bring a small plastic bottle of Vodka on board (only time I touch the stuff) and feel no pain until landing.
Not allowed to do that now.
But, hypothetically, if I forgot I had a plastic bottle in my carry on, would it show up? Not that I'm thinking of it, oh no!

The stupid thing about these rules is that ANYTHING can be a weapon when placed in dangerous hands. Now sure, banning guns, knives and scissors will decrease the odds of a violent attack. But in the wrong hands, even the plastic cutlery they give with the meal can be a vicious weapon (I wouldn't like the plastic knife in my eye, put it that way). Ditto the duty free (a broken bottle makes a handy weapon), belts, and other things.

The rule is so dumb unless we all board flights naked.

Who are you flying with that they don't dish out the free booze as often as you want?

yep, i've flown a lot lately across the pond and the airlines are pretty hot on liquids....however if you think it would help your nerves then go for it and if they don't find it then you're good to go, worst that can happen is they will throw it away...safe trip and say a big hi to the uk from moi :p

btw there are some places to buy/drink alcohol at most airports.

Re: Drinks on Planes

When I used to fly LHR-Moscow most of the passengers would devour their duty free on the flight. There were many happy Russians when we landed.

I thought you could bring it in if it was in a plastic bag. You might want to check the most recent announcement at your airline's website. The rules change nearly every week.

a couple of time now friends have forgotten bottles of water and toiletries etc and they havent been picked up at security

Re: Drinks on Planes

If you are with any US airline you will almost certainly have to pay $5 or $6 per drink - one of the reasons why I will only fly with Continental, American Airlines etc as a last resort!

The British airlines eg. Virgin & BA still give complimentary alcoholic drinks on board in all classes eg. wine or champagne with your meal. I sat next to a Scottish couple on my BA flight back to Newark a just over a week ago and they asked the stewardess if they could have two bottles of wine each....and got them! So did I... :D (and was sneakily given an extra bottle as I was leaving the plane LOL).

You can't take alcohol with you before going through security....*but* you can buy whatever you want at the Duty Free shops to take on board with you. (Yes I know they're all crap in the US airports.....) . Perhaps see if you can find some miniatures at the duty free shop?.

You can still buy Duty Free drinks & perfumes etc. when you're coming back from the UK....they're putting it in a sealed clear plastic bag when you pay for them and I think if you're flying to the US you're not supposed to open them at all until you clear US customs (although they didn't check my carry-on baggage at EWR despite having to put my suitcase through an X-Ray machine after picking it up from the carousel.

You do know that your carry on baggage will be X-Rayed just before you go to the departure gate don't you? If you take a small plastic bottle of vodka they will (or should) find it and confiscate it.... :scared: I guess you could drink it before going through security but you will need to show that you're sober enough to board the plane or you won't be going anywhere until you've sobered up! ;)

Check your airline's website for the latest regs. re; gels and liquids....you can take limited amounts on board in a clear plastic 'glad' sandwich bag.

Most airports have a bar - why not have a drink at one of them after clearing security?

Just take an extra $15 and pay for it on board

You buy duty free purchases after the security checks but before the gate...at US airports you collect your duty free purchases at the gate. I was under the impression that it couldn't be consumed during the flight. Why don't you just pay for the drinks on board?

Just make sure the flight crew don't notice.

You can buy it once you go past security in the shops

Rushman Nov 28th 2006 8:52 pm

Re: Drinks on Planes

I wouldn't risk smuggling a bottle on board and apparently the flight crew are supposed to take your duty free until you land....which is supposed to stop you getting shitfaced and buy their stupidly overpriced booze.
Just do what I do......loads of hard drugs just before I go through security.

I presume that's so the cabin crew can control the alcohol consumption of passengers.

lol we'd land at an airport and the taxi ride to the hotel would be equated by the number of beers as to the time..lol those were good fun times for sure :)

Re: Drinks on Planes

I felw air india from lax to Germany. We were on our honeymoon (nothing but the best for my wife!).
It was quite an experience. The good thing was that the ancient 747 was half full so we each had 2 seats to ourselves plus loads of leg room. My wife told the stewardess that it was our honeymoon and asked if they had any champagne. The stewardesss was a bit rude and said no of course not, not for economy class.
Anyway at breakfast time just before we landed the cabin staff asked to see us. They ushered us into their little galley and then proceeded to empty out their drinks cabinet. They gave us a full bottle of gin a full bottle of whiskey and then started stuffing every pocket we had with miniatures. Quite what we were supposed to do with it all I wasnt sure!
Sadly we didnt drink it on our honeymoon.. trust me it wasnt very nice whiskey. So we brought it back. The whiskey arrived in pieces in our hold luggage and our clothes stank of booze! We still have the miniatures at home...

I'd reckon that your bottle would be found. As well as perhaps two pairs of eyes scanning everything that is going through the x-ray (hand luggage included), you may be singled out for your hand luggage to be physically inspected post x-ray.

Have you considered OTC meds to help calm your nerves?

I would have to be so totally shit faced before even boarding an Air India flight, I would not be able to stomach any more booze.

Jim.

Once upon a time, on an Air India flight, one Indian man and a English man were traveling, the indian man got his dinner from home,
he took it out the box, and took out a roti (indian chapati) then at that moment the english man curiously asked 'what?s
that', the indian replied 'bread of India'
After a while the indian took out a gulabjamun (indian sweet), at that moment english asked 'whats that' then english
replied 'sweet of india', after some time the indian guy farted with a big sound at that moment the english man asked
'what?s that', the indian said thats 'AIR INDIA'

Re: Drinks on Planes

yes it was quite the adventure
as we took off I noticed fuel pouring out of the wing..one spark and...
i pointer it out to the flight attendent. He seemed a little concerned but thought that it would probably be ok. I wasnt very reassured given that we had to fly so far one really doesnt want to run out of fuel over the atlantic. The good thing was that that plane was delayed by 2 hours, good for us because we got to the airport an hour late!
On the return journey my wife decided that it would be a great idea to get as drunk as possible as quickly as possible in prague. Not hard to do there with all the absinthe flowing. Next morning I felt terrible, my wife who has never had a hangover was all bright and breezy. It was the day of the Prague marathon so there were no taxis anywhere.. we finally just managed to get tot he airport in time. I managed not to throw up in the taxi. However getting on the plane was terrible. Very cramped seats, the smell of curry cooking and bo... it was stifling hot as the air con wasnt working.. really not what you want when youre nursing an absinthe hangover from hell!

Would love to booze it up but am always worried about DVT from the dehydration.
I always get trancs before flying. Trouble is they wear off halfway usually and my husband has to steer me (dribbling) through the gates. :D

Oh for the days of Dan Air and the other oldies that have since defunked?
Any one remeber the days when you boarded the plane half cut and by the time you got to your destination you were staggering, it was drink you own(even though you were not supposed too) and empty the stocks on the Plane, those old flights to Ibiza etc were like flying pubs back in the 80's.
I cringe when I think what it was like, lol those poor Hosties :scared:

Ahhhhhhhhhh...... The old 3 can journey.

London was a 3 can journey by train, a five can journey by car. Good times for sure.
