Default Domestic flights (booking)

Question:

So I have to fly up to Boston in 4 weeks to coordinate getting the rest of mine & my ex's stuff back down here. Is it best to book the flight now, or should I wait a little longer? The prices seem to fluctuate daily.

I don't tend to travel a lot by air, so any advice is appreciated.

The closer you get to the date you need to travel, the more expensive the flights will be. Book early!

Check the Kayak website as it searches multiple airlines/travel sites and shows the prices for all.
You can then set an alert via email which will send the prices each day.

Be aware Kayak does not search Southwest and maybe 1 or 2 other airlines.

Thanks Ian, that's what I thought, but I wasn't sure as on the rare occasions I have flown, I've purchased well in advance.

Speaking of Kayak, I have the Kayak app on my phone. The flights look pretty cheap right now.

Skyscanner is another good alternative comparison site:

Four weeks out, often yes. Longer term, not necessarily. Also highly depends on route, season, and sales. Buying medium/long haul in January, for example, even a couple of weeks out, is often cheaper than buying the same exact flight several months earlier.

I did once hear the optimum time to buy a flight is around 5-6 months out as airlines start adjusting buckets around then depending on loads booked so far, but again, it's so variable that the figure can only ever be an average across the board and not specific to particular routes or seasons. In other words, it's meaningless!

Four weeks from now is the Christmas more or less. It's not going to get any cheaper between now and then.

If you really need to save money, try to fly before December 15, when all the fares move into 'holiday mode'.

No - government issued photo ID should suffice.

Yes. That should be perfect.

If it were me, I'd pack my passport, just in case you run into problems, but all you should need is your license.

We're flying to Miami on Friday to get on a cruise ship on Saturday, so I'll have both passports with me anyway. I'll try to get through with my DL first, but have the rest as a backup if needed. I know I don't need my British passport, just the US one, but it never hurts to be prepared!

If you're a LPR, bring the greencard, if you're on a visa, you're meant to carry your passport and visa on you at all times anyway, so it's still worth bringing...what with an airport likely to have ICE, who can ask to see your immigration status and all that...

Unlikely that ICE will be involved with a domestic flight. They've got way too much to do with the international ones, which is where Immigration operates!

If you're in a puddle jumper airport, that' be true.
