Has anyone brought there car and their dog to the US from canada? What do they need
to see at the port of entry?

It will tell you how to go about getting the manufacturer's clearance letter for the import of your vehicle. It must be US safety and emissions guidelines.

As for your furry best friend, you are told you need a vet's good health certificate. Some people have not been asked for it at the border and a few have been. It is up to you. Personally, I would rather have the dog examined prior to entry by his vet and a list of all his shots and his prior health records in my hand to give to his new doctor in the States.

The key thing to remember about bringing a dog into the States is that it needs to have been vaccinated for rabies with 30 days PRIOR to arrival in the country. Be sure to ask your vet for a signed certificate verifying this. You may be asked to present this to Customs.

Like Rita said, I'd take the safe route and get all the vaccinations up-to-date, not just the rabies one. But the rabies vaccination, in particular, needs to be done in the 30 days before the dog arrives in the States.

And just to clarify: There is NO quarantine for HEALTHY dogs entering the United States.

Also, we got quite a bit of hassle from Customs when we inadvertantly shoved some extra dog treats into our carry-ons when we were relocating back to the US from Chile. We had brought them to the airport to give to our dog, but didn't think to throw the extras away once she'd been taken to the plane.

Apparently dog treats and dog food are like any other meat/vegetable product, and are prohibited from being brought into the States from other countries. I don't know if this holds true for Canada, but probably so for most any other country.

One other piece of advice: If you are flying with your dog, and have to make a connecting flight, be sure to ask the airline staff if your dog will be put on an earlier flight to your destination. That's what happened to us in Dallas when we were trying to get home to DC. We wanted to make sure our pooch was alright, let her out to relieve herself, etc. (especially after a 9-hour flight), but no one seemed to know what happened to her.

It wasn't until 2+ hours later, after we had just buckled our seatbelts to take off, that the flight attendent said, "Oh, your dog was put on another flight to DC two hours ago." No one told us this beforehand, and more importantly, no one ASKED us if this was ok. I understand that they were probably trying to be compassionate, but ultimately our dog ended up sitting alone at Wash-Dulles airport for several more hours, with no one letting her out of her crate or giving her water because they were afraid she might bite (she's a 100lb Akita).

Our poor baby was stuck in her airline crate for 14-15 hours and had no water for who-knows-how-long. If we had known the airline was going to put her on an earlier flight, we would have objected, because during our layover we would have had plenty of time to let her out to relieve herself and give her some food and water.
