dog advice needed for Bay area Cal
Can anyone help - there is such knowlege out there I'm sure you can! My poor German Shepherd, the subject of another thread, is a 'complete' dog - am I right in thinking that he has to be a chopped dog in California??
some sites indicate that he has to be under ab1634, then others dont seem to have the smae opinion - so advice please people. And has anyone else brought a big dog over from the UK in the past couple of years?

Ive never heard of any state forcing a neuter or spay... I raised GSD's since I was 8 yrs old in PA, NY and Montana... Cali may be different though... Contact your local animal control unit and they can tell you more about ordinances and regulations in the county you live in.

Brought this up as I was pinted to a bit of legislation here under:
CA AB 1634
which refers to it but at present its restricted to dogs that have had a warning, but I have been led to believe that its going to be introduced for all dogs, which does seem a bit far fetched but as we have to go through the whole paper trail with our dog, just trying to make sure we have done everything!
Thanks for coming back to me = good to know that big dogs are somewhere over here!!!

If that's the same bill you're talking about.
Chicago tried a forced spay/neuter legislation I believe, and it didn't make it. I somewhat doubt even California will manage it - although I suppose if anywhere could, it would be CA.
Edit: looks like Chicago votes today, I must have heard wrong (or this site did). Apparently California is still trying it

Apparently avoid LA - it appears they might have a spay/neuter ordinance.

Do they make an exception for people who breed dogs? If all dogs have to be fixed, puppies have to come from somewhere, ya know. Or would that mean that breeders can't live in L.A.?

However, Chicago's proposed ordinance would require a criminal background check and a home inspection (!!!!).

The California bill hasn't passed yet, so for right now, it isn't a law.

Just wait until the authorities introduce that law for the crims that have been inside 3 times. It might reduce the number of apprentice crims.

Great, so that means that the only dogs one can find are going to be full bred and cost a crapload of money. What if I just want a plain ol' mutt? While I agree in concept that there does need to be more spaying/neutering of pets, this proposed law just helps the breeders make money by creating those expensive designer dogs.

People will be much less likely to comply with licensing - so the city doesn't know about their dogs. Which will mean those dogs will also be unvaccinated. Terrific plan.
Actually, I am not in favour of breeding dogs on purpose other than purebreds. You can get me on my whole rant (I did breed dogs a little) - it's because of the welfare of the dogs and the breeds.
But there are SO many dogs in shelters, and SO many being put down, a dog shortage is the last thing I personally would worry about.
In fact, there are many purebreds in shelters, and in the hands of rescue groups, that you can get a purebred for the same $$$ as a mutt depending upon what you want.

Agree - its a good idea in some ways as there are so many dogs in shelters etc - but I wonder if they are in the shelters because its almost impossible to have a large dog in the Bay area. It appears that no one will rent you a place if a large dog is involved but they will if a 'handbag' dog is around - in my experience they tend to be the nippy and chewy ones rather than the large dogs!
Like the idea of using this type of law for the crims!

That said, it is hard to rent if you have a large dog. Thing is.... a small dog does eat less - less carpet, less doors, less...
Don't get me wrong, I'm a great fan of big dogs (have 3 myself) - but I would quiver as a landlord I'm afraid.
