My UK passport expired in 2001 and since I had a name change, instructions on the UK embassy site suggest that I send in the C1 application form, i.e. the same form used by first time UK passport applicants.

However, since I do have the expired UK passport with me that I'll be sending in with the application, do I need to send in my original birth certificate as well? First time applicants are asked to send in their birth certificate which I'm not.

I'd rather not send in my birth certificate since if it is lost, will be too much hassle getting a replacement since I live here in the US.

Would appreciate guidance on this. Thanks!

Since your passport is not "recently expired", yes.


Well, that's your choice - but if you don't send in your b/c, they'll return your application as incomplete.


It's really not "too much hassle"... and if you wanted to avoid the hassle, you should have renewed your passport 9 years ago.
