Documentation Requirement (US/UK) Dual National
Hello Everyone
I applied and received my British passport roughly three years ago, but I'm now going through the process with my nephew. Here are the details: 1) My sister was born in the UK 2) We have a copy of her long-form birth certificate 3) I have a copy of my nephew's birth certificate (born in USA) 4) I have a copy of my sister/brother-in-law's marriage certificate (to show the name change). On the site listing documentation requirements, it also states you need to provide: Your original British Citizen parents' passports (http://ukinusa.fco.gov.uk/en/help-fo...s-first-timers) My sister does not have a British passport - and when I applied back in 2009, this was not a requirement. Will the birth certificates be sufficient? Thanks in advance |
Re: Documentation Requirement (US/UK) Dual National
Just to clarify your sister's citizenship.
She was born in what year? Was she born to British citizens? Why doesn't she have a British Passport? The answers to these questions may clarify if she is able to pass on British citizenship. |
Re: Documentation Requirement (US/UK) Dual National
Birth and marriage certificates are sufficient proof of citizenship. If the original British passport has been lost or destroyed, then just say it's not available.

She was born in 1972 to my mother (a British citizen, born in the UK), and father (US serviceman). She left England on her American passport.

Yes - I just couldn't remember if I saw the Documentation requirement:
"Your original British Citizen parents' passports" When I applied for my passport several years ago. The way they word it makes it seem that this is a requirement for all applications, as there's an "AND" right before it. |

Thanks everyone for the clarification. Headed to England in May, and want to breeze through immigration with my nephew :-)
