Do you play your state lottery?

State lotteries are the most egalitarian institutions in America. It doesn't matter who your father is. It doesn't matter if you know any Senators. It doesn't matter how much you donate to political parties. Unlike getting into Yale or Harvard, everybody has equal opportunity in state lotteries.

Except that I've read or heard that most of the players are the poor who want to "make a packet" (and the IRS gets their cut too)! So, the poor who think they have a "snowball's chance in hell" of winning the big one spend a few Dollars a week playing this game of (not a lot of) chance.

NC is one state that doesn't have its own lottery.

I found out the other day that if you take the 'cash' option (the jackpot upfront) then they will only give you half the money, then you have to pay tax on what you receive.

The reson being the lottery want their cut too, if you take it in installments they would get interest on the money they are holding for you.

That's what they do here in Illinois anyway.

You can play the Massachusetts Lottery by subscription, it doesn't matter where you live. It would make a great gift.

10. QUESTION: Can non-residents play the game? If so, how do they collect?
10. ANSWER: Yes, anyone 18 and over can purchase any Lottery product at any agent location. All players can collect their prizes at the same locations listed in question four. Additionally, Season Tickets can be purchased directly from any sales agent while in the state or from out of state, by calling l-800-222-TKTS. The ticket can be registered in the owner's name by completing and returning the registration form to the Lottery. Season Tickets are available for Megabucks, Mass Cash and Mega Millions.
