Yes, I understand that and we have public transportation here that can easily be taken to the mall. However, I was thinking more of younger children originally.

What about places other than the mall?

I've no idea whatsoever whether I would like to live in the USA or not as I've not had the opportunity to find out and now look very unlikely to ever do so, but maybe I wouldn't if some of the American tourists I see over here are any kind of guideline. Polite they may be with their "sirrrs" and "ma'ams" but their "universal wordliness" or lack thereof is quite crap at times. Still, they can be good for a laugh, like the American tourist on the ramparts of Edinburgh Castle wondering why she couldn't see the Eiffel Tower anywhere as she asked a guide for assistance. He told her to check her travel itinerary and her diary.

I know the American bloke in the clip is most probably pretending to be stupid in a real life encounter with English people in a London park, but some like him really are not pretending at all. :D

No parents, just kids enjoying ourselves, playing run-outs, football, had, knock-out, knock down ginger, high-ball, pat-ball and i million other London games. But in America i NEVER let my kids out of line of sight or too close to the street or more than 100 yards distance.

I was roaming London by age 12 and new bus routes like the back of my hand, but here there is a constant nagging fear that my children will be snatched.... I really cannot explain it. my children are way too sheltered. They have zero street smarts.

We played this on my estate. I understand they can no longer call it knock down ginger for fear of being called Gingists. What a world.

We played British Bulldog in a similar manner. You were supposed to just tag the person as they tried to run past you. In reality, those 'on' would single out an individual and steam into him. Heaven help you if you were among the last to be caught.

tag was a euphamism for knocking the poor bastard through the wall.

Don't know, I've never rode the bus...:D Anyway, public transportation is pretty good here. My husband could take the bus from home all the way to work, however he doesn't want the hassle (he didn't want the hassle in the UK either....;)) My neighbor's daughter didn't get her driver's license until recently and had a job down at the Y. Her parents weren't going to drive her every time that she had to go to work, so she hopped on the bus and went off to work.

Yup, I agree with the transportation thing. I live in Suburbia outside a city in Maine. I love the fact that my kids have had a very carefree childhood riding bikes, climbing trees, playing with pets on massive lots. I do despair that as they age they'll be hanging out on the cul-de-sac doing nothing. Unless I fork out lots of $ for camps they will be bored and into mischief, whereas when I was 13 I was getting the bus into town and cleaning hotel rooms on Saturday Morning and feeling quite independent. Sigh...what to do?

Beat them and lock them in the basement, there's nothing else to do.

Think of the children.

I'm new to this forum, but i'm going to put my 2 cents in anyway, we have been here for 12 years now, my kids who were 7 and 10 when we came have grown up with US 'culture'. If I could do it over again I would not have come. Now it may be due to location - we are in the midwest, and for us perhaps being on either the east or west coast would have been better. My eldest cannot wait to go back to europe and I hope she does, I'm so done with the narrow-mindedness of people. Here the idea of travel is to go to St Louis!!;)
Now im whinging!!

He told me had been on vacation and just gotten back..so of course I was interested..thinking a trip to the islands...maybe even to Europe?? NOPE!! ST. LOUIS!...was the answer!! Without thinking, it just blurted out of my mouth...."WHY?????"
