Do NOT wait around for SSN after arrival!
Just wanted to warn others that requests for an immigrant to receive a SSN are apparently regularly ignored.
Back when we were preparing form DS-230, my husband ticked the box indicating that he would like to be assigned a SSN. We were told at his interview that the SSN would arrive separately from his green card and could take up to six months.
After five months, we finally decided to visit a Social Security branch and see if he had at least been assigned one. He hadn't. The rep said that 95% of the time, that section of form DS-230 is ignored.
My advice to others is to wait 3-4 weeks after arrival in the US, or perhaps until the green card comes, and if you haven't received the SSN, visit a Social Security office with your ID documents. They had us fill out an application and sent the SSN card in less than a week.

That has always been the advice on BE. The SS card usually comes before the green card. If the local SS office is a convenient trip away then the best bet is to go in 10 days after arriving, or few days longer, and ask if they have your details. Taking as you say ID documents with you.

As Lansbury mentions. That's always been the case and the advice is always to give it 10 days before going to the office to check if you have one assigned or to apply for the number then.
Definitely worth going out of the way to a quieter office though.

Just trying to help others who, like us, went by what the immigration officers said.
