Do I need to file taxes for 2013? Arrived 26 Mar 2014 in US
Hi,
Probably am being a numpty, but do I need to file Federal and State Tax Returns for 2013 as I arrived in the US on 26th March 2014? I am not earning anything at present and don't envisage starting a job before April 15th.
Just thinking in terms of the requirements of being a Permanent Resident etc.

A little tidbit I remember from my long ago law school class on US income tax. The individual has the option to select what will be his tax year. Most people default to the calendar year -- but I recall that it is not required. However, once the tax year is selected, you are struck with it.
I recall the professor commenting that "only accountant's kids do that."
Given that everything else is based upon calendar year, it would really be a mess if one elects other than calendar year.
I have no idea if this is still true for individuals. However, it is quite common for business entities to use other than the calendar year. BTW, the biggest business using a different year is the Federal Government -- their 'fiscal year' begins each October 1st. It used to be July 1st but they had a five quarter year to punch it out. I know that the State of California still starts on July 1.

However if you became an LPR this year, you will need to file a dual-status tax return next year, read IRS publication 519.
