Do American Supermarkets have a reduced food section.

Some do have them here, but not as much as I remember at home. I haven't seen this in a chilled section here - except for at Fresh & Easy. (Just found out we are getting another F&E nearer to my home.. Yay!!)

meijers have a small shelf unit with all the non chilled food stuffs on them - that include short dates, dented tins/ ripped packets etc. They usually have a bakery rack too that has short dated items - but never seen any chilled goods reduced.

Stop n Shop do have them, but it's for the stuff that's well battered and not worth buying and baked goods.
Hannafords sometimes for the baked goods and that's about it.
Don't see it as much, shame really, nice getting end of day goods if you bought them regularly.

I don't know why "fresh and easy" and you, Samba, made me smile...but it did

This is really sad, as I'm the American in the relationship and so you would think I would know the answer but after living in England for a few years, I can't remember if there is a reduced food section.
All the big supermarkets in England do it and my husband and I usually check out the different sections looking for a bargain and we were just wondering if the American supermarkets do them?

Some do. I'm assuming you mean products that are near their expiration date, or dented cans, or day old bread.

Many have small sections of dented cans and you can often find 'last day' meat on sale (i.e. being sold on the 'sell by' date). There are also some stores that seem to cater to lower price items / discount groceries, such as Food Lion.
fwiw "dented can" is slang in some parts for a person who has a few issues. "I could probably get a date with her because she's a dented can"--meaning they've been though a bit and would probably go out with someone below their normal 'asking price'. Harsh but c'est la vie.

Not as good as the co-op we used to live opposite. We knew exactly what time they put out the reduced meat and used to save a fortune

Picking up some HP Sauce at Meijer, I had a quick gander at some dark choc digestives for my beloved. They weren't on sale ($5.99) but they were out of date - printed date of 13/2/10. I told a nearby wifie and she took 4 packets off the shelf to stick in the back to destroy. I asked if they could mark 'em down, but no luck.
Could've had a very happy Mrs. HD there
Tighta$$. I don't care

What's a wifie? or did you mean wifey? no, that doesn't make sense in the post.

Anyone like fillet steak? Just before closing the other day I bought two Sainsbury's "Taste the Difference" fillet steaks reduced from £8 to 45p. My wife and I are pescetarian* - and our dog is very lucky. And some big fat tuna steaks reduced from about £6 to 30p. Nice. I'm going to miss those fantastic reductions in USA.
...actually I think I'll probably have one of those steaks today. I'm kind of part-time carnivore when it suits.
* that's not one of those strange American religions, like piscopalians or something, we only eat vegetables and fish!
