We use fast food loos if possible and avoid gas station stops at all costs, unless desperate!

My favourite American bog was in Colorado... Going up on one of these mountain tracks, nothing major really there's just windy roads going up the sides of the mountain, you drive slow and there's lots of open areas where you park up and see the views. I think it was some trail at Estes Park, I can't remember.
They had these little wooden shacks at each of these 'open areas', for toilets. After about half hour or so, I had to 'go', so thinking yeah it's probably not going to be too great I wait outside the locked door for whoever is in there to finish. I go in and it's a reasonably large say 12ft x 12ft wooden-panelled room. There's absolutely NOTHING in it, nothing in it whatsoever... Apart from a small round hole cut into the floor in the corner. Thank **** I only needed to pee!
I did look in the hole and it was full of ice (it's snowy and stuff up there) and poo. :s I thought this information would be relevant to you guys.
... You'd think I were in France, not supposedly civilised USA!

Exactly. I only use the relatively clean ones, and then I don't touch any surface. I would never use those outside ones - been in several inside ones where I felt like I should have been armed.

Disgusting. My brother was over for a conference a couple of years ago and needed to use the facilities. Stopped for gas, well, Mr Cleanliness nearly puked right there and then. We walked to a neighboring Panera to use the facilities. I don't go near any one of those places. I'd rather do a Leslie....
