Default Different names on GC and SSC

Hi all,

I have a question regarding my GC and my SSC. I have my maiden name on my GC card (after the extension) but my SSC is still under my married name (no longer married). I wasn't able to change this due to the pandemic but I need to look into that now. I just got a job and am wondering what name I should use on the forms? The GC or the SSC? Thanks in advance.

What name did you give them when applying for the job - surely you need to use that - unless you want to confuse HR.

The informational form the employer will ask you to fill in, showing that you are legally able to work in the US. What name do you intend to use going forward? Use that name on the employment docs. Or, for now, you could use both names -- Mary Smith Brown, e.g. -- and have HR remove the Brown part once you have been able to get to SS.

Use the name that you want going forward, and just have paperwork handy to prove that you were legally known under both names. Birth certificate, marriage certificate and/or divorce decree. I had a similar situation after I got married. Social Security card in one name, Green Card in another. UK passport in one name US passport in another. I used my married name everywhere but work where I used my maiden name. Never had a problem using either name so long as I could prove I was both people.

note that some PEO’s and maybe larger employers may have their own applications that connect to eVerify to do an electronic verification of your eligibility, if your employer will do this I would suggest checking yourself on eVerify and then using the name that you “pass” with so they don’t have issues when they run you information.

Thanks for that info Glasgow Girl. One other thing which may sound stupid, but as long as I have my GC and SSC that's all I need to be gainfully employed right? There isn't a separate "work permit" needed or? I have a 10 year GC. Thanks

The 10 year green card is all you need to be legally allowed to work. For the I-9, you don't need to show your green card. You can show your SS card and state drivers license.

Thanks Rene,
I just tried to do the EVerify but it didn't work and I tried both names (GC one and SS one). Not sure what happened there but I guess I will leave it up to them to do that.

look at the I9 form it tells you what you need on page 2:
https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/...er-version.pdf
as noted below, the green card alone satisfies list A. You still need the SSN, but not the card.

The SSA is known to make inquiry if earnings from different names are reported to the same account. However, they seem to have algorithms that recognize common explanations such a married/maiden names. I know that some time ago that this lawyer received inquiry if he was employed at the former Kaiser Steel under a different name.
