I spent a few days in Mainz on the Rhine a few years back and did a boat trip; getting into the restroom on Das Boot was interesting, one of the crew set up a table at the entrance where a line quickly formed. It felt really strange and sort of uncomfortable waiting in public to pay to have a #1.

A relative told me that was nothing; on a trip in Europe she had to pay for individual strips of toilet paper. It was a family business. The family’s living room had an opening that opened into the facilities and you went to the opening to buy the strips. The family were having dinner when she bought her strip. Yuk-eee-dar … just seemed so alien and a definite 9.0 on the weird-oh-meter.
