Skyped my Mum today who claimed they had had snow overnight in Hampshire, UK. I showed her REAL snow, the foot+ that we had!

The UK is insulated from really severe cold simply because it is an island surrounded by waters which are a lot warmer in winter than they should be at this latitude because of the Gulf Stream effect.
Most of Europe is currently experiencing a spell of severe wintry weather with heavy snowfalls and temperatues down to -35C in places like Moscow and Warsaw, and -33C in Germany and -15C in Strasbourg, and in Calais the maximum temperature was only -10C while just 21 miles across the English Channel the maximum in Folkestone was a big fat zero C - just on freezing point.
The very cold weather in France and Belgium has had a serious effect on the running of the cross Channel Eurostar service which is now being totally suspended for the third day running due to severe weather conditions on the Continent and somewhat less harsh conditions in a snow covered but rather less nippy Kent and London.
If Britain was attached to the Continent, with no North Sea in existence, then it would be a lot colder here too in this present cold spell.
Manchester airport, among others, was seriously affected by snowfalls yesterday and had to cancel all flights in and out until the runways were cleared.
I'm dreaming of a white Christmas just like the............I don't think I can remember any real white Christmas to be honest......

We've got about three inches on the ground at home. Enough that the kids were able to get the sleds out. Well, kid. My son picked Fiday to come down with something that got his temp up to 102.7 and kept him in bed, watching his sister frolic from his window. He was not happy.

We got about a half inch here, but mostly just on the grass, hoping we don't get too much the rest of this week
