Indeed, Aussie food is much heathier ...

Had an affinity for them a few years back, using turkey as the base for the filling rather than beef. Then grew out of them quite quickly. Plus I discovered those packs of Jack Daniels pulled pork and pulled chicken, which make for an even tastier manwich, and only require being thrown in the microwave.

It's pretty much just that, just the meat is suspended in a tomato based sauce.
And you'd eat it because it's quick, easy, and filling. In a very messy manner.

Yeah and I've not had one of those since I arrived and I don't intend starting anytime soon. Even the girls, first time they saw one said 'WTF is that?'. Didn't go down well, they were 11 and 13 at the time.

That's it. Somehow it appears to be a national 'fair' food here. I don't think they realise it's an American thing.

It's messy food, meant to be messy, but pretty much as you've described....it's basically breakfast in a can slapped into a bun, for dinner...well it should be

Sloppy Joes were a frequent occurrance in the middle- and high-school cafeterias when I was growing up. I think we also had them many times for dinner at home. I loved them.

YEARS later, I tried them on my own and they didn't taste the same at all. The canned mix tasted better as a pasta sauce, actually, rather than on a bun.

It looks like a chilli cheese dog from Wienerschnitzel! Looks gross but have to admit that hubby and I like them. On the other hand our 19 year old son refuses to eat there

Okay, ya'll - don't knock it if you haven't tried it! Chili dogs & hot dogs with sauerkraut used to be very popular up north (Chicago area). Chili-cheese dogs seem to be popular in the mid-south, but it depends on the dog, the chili and the cheese! Pronto pups (corn dogs) are BIG at fairs in these parts, so much so they're even sold in the frozen food departments at the local stores. A pronto pup smothered in mustard is great on a cool night at the fair, believe me. As for gross looking, I wouldn't touch black pudding with a 10' pole!

Now if you want to go for gross - how about "chittlins"! Or, more properly, chitterlings. That's what I call yuck!

Those chili cheese dogs from Der Wienerschnitzel must be the worst thing for you....but I love them! I've been eating them since I was 17 and I'm still alive. LOL
