Whilst Detroit itself may have problems it's a great place to visit with a number of lavish casinos, plus Comerica Park (Detroit Tigers baseball) and Ford Field (football), some amazing buildings and some very good restaurants. For walking tours check out Preservation Wayne (http://www.preservationwayne.org/) and you're there on a Saturday take a trip to Eastern Market.
On the outskirts there is Dearborn with Greenfield Village (outdoor museum with historic buildings) / The Henry Ford (eclectic indoor museum) / Rouge Factory Tour.
Alternatively there is Royal Oak which has some good restaurants (Lilys Seafood, Sangria), and isn't too far from the Detroit Zoo.
If you don't mind a 30 minute drive you can head for Ann Arbor - a student town that's a great place to walk around and also has good restaurants (Zingermans is a popular choice for lunch).
If you want to go shopping head North on I75 to Great Lakes Crossing in Auburn Hills. There's more shopping in Birch Run (about 30 mins North again on I75), and not far from there is Frankenmuth - a totally kitsch German village with a very big Christmas shop and themed restaurants.

I lived in Windsor for 10 years... did my undergraduate work there. If you get a chance, visit Jackson Park. It'll be lovely this time of year.

If you want so see some lavish mansions... head east of Detroit along the river to Grosse Point Park.

What type of car do you own?

Whilst I agree with your destination ideas, I think you'd have to drive incredibly fast to do it in the times you say.

Great Lakes crossing to Birch Run is nearly 60 miles, even assuming a clear run, you'd have to average 110-120mph to do it in 30 mins!
