Depends on where it was. The magnitude scale is logrithmic. Also, the distance form the temblor counts for a lot. Northridge was close in and had an unusual amount of vertical displacement.
Based upon experience, a "normal" 5.8 would cause one to pause, take a deep breath and then let it out when the shaking stops in in pretty short order. Northridge woke out of a sound sleep and then just kept on going, and going and going -- longest 30 seconds of my life.
Another thing to remember, construction in California has seismicity in mind. I know that when I have traveled on the East Coast I have felt a sense of nervousness because the structures were obviously not built with earthquakes in mind.
Those of you who felt it, pun intended, but you will feel shook up for a while. That is normal and will subside.

I was laying on a lounger at the beach in Virginia Beach and thought I had imagined the damn things had moved!!!!

A good friend's mother is from Chile. During the last Earthquake, the relatives posted "we're OK" messages to FaceBook when the I-Phones were working.

I was sat in a meeting room in a hotel in Simsbury, CT. The chandaliers wobbled slightly. I felt underwhelmed.
