Default Customs at UK Airports

Does anyone have any idea how it works for a UKC and USC spouse at customs in the UK? We are visiting at Christmas. Will she have to go desperately? Or do we both go through the slow lane etc?

Honestly just assumed it was like customs coming in to the States, where citizens and residents go seperately!

ah, if you’re meaning passport control then it’s usually a case of crowd control rather than going to specialist officers. These days it’s separated into “eu passports” and “non eu passports”. Depends on the airport you’re coming into as all seem to do it a bit differently. I would stick together, and when you get to the part where you join the queue tell the Border Force Officers stewards/helpers you are married and travelling together with different passports and ask which line to join.

I think you mean immigration and not customs. Families go through customs together regardless of citizenship, usually

This is good advice. My Australian partner and I go through separately but you have the benefit of being married.

Last time I went to England with my (unmarried, American) partner, I asked if we could both go through the EU line and they were fine with it.

Every time I've entered the US with my wife I've just joined the US citizens line with her (this is what I was told to the first time I asked) and have had no trouble since.

Entering the UK, we have to go separately as I use the unmanned passport gates where as her US passport obviously won't get her through them.

Yes, she likely will have to go desperately after the long flight. Especially if she drinks a lot of water.

Touche. Everybody was too busy telling me I didn't mean customs to catch that

We flew back during the 3 days prior to the meghan and harry's wedding, the average age on our flight was 97 - and the line for Non EU Citizens was probably around 5 or 6 hours.

I found out that heathrow has a 'Family Line' - apparently me being a UK Citizen allows both us through that, that line was 8 people in comparison to the 5 million pensioners in the non eu citizen line.

I always go through the line with the least number of people. Never had any problem. The Family Line at Heathrow is for EU residents traveling with kids who are too young to go through the e-passport gate.

I always take my wife through the UK line with me, in fact even while we were just dating we did that without any issues.
