Default Customs, duty free for shipping personal effects

Dear All,

Can anybody tell me what are the customs regulations regarding shipping your personal effects, cloths and household items to USA. Do I have to pay duty .. is there any personal allowance?

Regards,

Fady

There's no duty for personal effects. Same thing on the way home (though there are some time constraints - you can't buy a car just before you're leaving and ship it home duty-free, for example).

At the time I emigrated (2002), no duty is charged on personal effects brought over that were over 6 months old. This may have changed. Please check the US Customs website.

They now need to be over one year old. I think you may need to have receipts for anything that is over 1 year old but looks new.
