Sorry Penguin but you missed the point. What I said was that maintaining a UK bank account would enable you to service your UK credit card and it is THAT which you can use in the USA. It gets round the very problem to which you refer.....no credit history in the USA ........cause you aint getting credit there..........its in the UK!

Where do I find info on the paypal system? it sounds good to me.
I also understand that if you have a MBNA credit card with a good history in th UK then the USA MBNA WILL take the credit history into account and give a USA card. It might be a good way to start building your USA history

In fact, what you were trying to say was that usage of a UK credit card and UK bank account in the US makes no progress towards establishing/building a credit history in the US.
Perhaps you aren't bothered about establishing a credit history in the US.
Peace :-)

I'm sure it gets around the problem but isn't the real problem no US
credit history (and the stupid credit agencies that operate worldwide
but only seem to care about accounts in a particular country)? Of
course, there is no reason not to use the UK card in the US while one
tries to build a US credit history but that can't be the real answer,
only a stopgap measure

Penguin, thats twice now that you have told me what I was trying to say and you have it wrong again. I was.....very simply......saying (and I am usually reasonably clear to those who read) that if you cant get credit in the usa (which is difficult initially) then you can retain an ability to obtain credit by using UK credit cards and uk bank accounts. Its worth thinking about before you close your UK bank account and junk your UK credit card. End of story.

It doesn't matter that one can continue to have a UK credit history. For those who will be moving or have moved to the US, it is more important to focus on how to establish credit in the US.

Do give me a break Penguin........if it takes a good time to get credit established in the USA it is obviously helpful to think how you will be able to get credit during the interim. Please refrain from telling other people what they should post, and do try to read the posts properly.

It depends on the definition of "any"
One problem is that on arrival to the US I couldn't buy anything on
credit without a credit card. I agree this problem could be solved by
using a UK card.
Another problem is that, in most cases, a new immigrant has absolutely
no credit in the US on arrival. While its obvious that a UK credit card
could be used to buy things things (or a spouse's US card for that
matter) this won't help to establish a US crdit record.
I think I'm reading too much into the word "any" here. Clearly "any"
problem can't be solved by using a UK card but maybe it doesn't matter
anymore.
