The rest of the hat etiquette (and I kid you not) is to make sure the ballcap doesn't look new. Back in the day, my son would take one and deliberately make it look somewhat battered and worn.
What's funny is that kids are now wearing them brand new (flat bill, etc.) as they think the worn look is dated. I kid you not, look closely at the hats the next time you seen teens or younger.
