Default crime in Tucson

Hi all,
I have been offered a job in Tucson Arizona which we are thrilled about (me, the husband, daughter 7 and son 5). We have looked into the pros and cons as much as we can but don't know if we should be worried about the high crime rate.
Any advice or any comments will be grately appreciated.

Jools and Steve.

I can imagine your worry however we've all discussed here recently that one of the surprising things about the US is that although the crime is high it tends to be concentrated in certain area's of the cities. So in essence stay out of those neighbourhoods and your generally fine. Obviously I would hate to say that and it not be the case in Tucson but I cant really see that Tuscon would be any different than any where else.

You best bet I think would be to find websites that have the crime figures for your city and see if some areas are high compared to others. Also if you call a Realtor and ask about good neighbourhoods they should be able to advise. When I first moved here I called the Police Dept but they wouldn't tell me anything incase I sued them, and you may find that will be the same with the Realtor but if you ask the right questions like good school districts or even areas that families tend to live, etc, you will find that most good school districts will also be in good neighbourhoods.

Nothing to worry about, whatsoever. If you want to hang about for extended periods in a bad area of the town, I'm sure you will witness it eventually. Everywhere else, it's pretty unlikely to affect you at all except through the sensational coverage on the local TV news, which you'll soon get bored with and switch off.

Not on the local TV! I remember seeing the AZ governor on local TV for the very first time about 6 months after we first arrived. The reason for the coverage was that she'd booked into a clinic to have cosmetic surgery!

They have only three obssessions:
1/ Shootings -- usually occur in exactly the same area of a couple of sq. miles in town.
2/ Court cases -- but only where they involve sex of some sort.
3/ Kids drowning in swimming pools.

I recently posted crime stats that had Tuscon leading the nation in certain catagories. I'll try to find it.

I don't claim to be an expert on Tuscon (I've only been there on business on a couple of occasions), but I wouldn't worry about crime. As noted, US crime tends to be isolated in certain pockets of cities, rather than being widespread, and you should generally have no problems avoiding bad areas. Tuscon should be no exception to that rule.

Tuscon has its fair share of dodgy areas -- the "Miracle Mile" is far from being miraculous, and you will find no shortage of dodgy Latino barrios or trailer-trash havens scattered about town -- but there are also posh areas for the well-heeled. The affluent often live at the north end of town, near or in the hills, and then commute into the downtown area to work via one of the main north-south arterial roads. (As are many US cities, Tucson is laid out in a fairly neat grid.)

There are also towns outside of Tuscon, particularly to the south, that serve as affluent "bedroom community" suburbs to Tucson, in which case you would likely use Interstate 17 to get to work. Many of these towns are geared toward retirees, so do make sure that you learn about their individual demographics if you wish to avoid being half the age of your neighbors. Yahoo! maps and Mapquest.com will give you an idea of the distances involved and an estimate of non-peak hour commute times.

In any case, I do hope that you can pay a visit before making a decision. I'm not sure what you're looking for, but opinions on Tucson are mixed. Personally, I'm not a big fan, but I tend to dislike deserts and Republicans enough to prefer other locales, whilst others actually prefer a dry climate, sagebrush and the charms of an aging doublewide trailer...

Ditto Geordiegirl2 .... have lived in Tucson for 14 months now and have had no probs with crime. Actually in the area I live there is a zero crime rate - hard to believe that some people actually go can still leave their doors unlocked when they go out ... prob something to do with all the large, vocal dogs in the yards (including mine)

Come on over, you will love the weather here.I visit Tucson regulary and have never had any problems whatsoever, its a great little town. There are a couple of areas that are not too special but every town has them. There are some beautiful areas just north and west of downtown ie Ina road area,Tangerine road area ,Speedway Blvd west of Silverbell road,Avra Valley and Marana and around Catalina. There is much to do and see around the Tucson area, good restaraunts, hiking, golfing, skiing, sightseeing etc.Take the plunge,You wont regret it.Been here 33 years and would not live anywhere else, just my 2 cents worth.
