Default cost of a crown???

Hi Everyone!
went to do a final check up with my dentist yesterday and he told me I have a crack tooth and need a crown! price: £420 for partial white or £520 for a full porcelain (cant have a metal as its very visible)
I guess as Im just preparing the move to the US, im wondering if its cheaper to wait and get it done there??
We will have some dental insurance through my husband work but in case they dont cover crowns, I was wondering what is the usual cost for a crown overthere? (approx as I guess all dentists are different)
would you recommend having it done here or there?
thank you!

Cost of a crown? About 5 shillings!

I paid about £500 privately 5-6 years ago. I had to have it replaced recently but with an NHS dentist and that cost about £350. I can't remember what type though.

For a full porcelain I think you'd be looking at a lot more than £520 in the US.

Costs are highly variable and the following article describe the costs. The city/region that you are located will also have a large effect on the price.

We've discussed this before and found that the average price is approx $1K...give or take a few hundred. As Michael said cost will depend on the area you are in and whether you have dental insurance or not. I have dental insurance...they paid half and I paid half.

The dentist will probably require you to have a full dental check up...including x-rays before he undertakes any dental work.

DH had some work done for a cracked tooth recently, including a crown, and I think it came to between 1 and 1.5 thousand dollars AFTER insurance, and our dental insurance is not bad.

Once here, your insurance company may not cover it as it is a pre-exisiting condition.

Get it done there. It's probably cheaper.

In 1998, a Root Canal here, cost me $525.

I just paid $755 for my daughter's root canal and that was with insurance! My advice would be to get it done! Good luck. I hate the dentist!!!

Dental work in North America, well atleast the US and Canada is not generally all that affordable, and sometimes the insurance is pretty crappy.

If your gonna be living near the Mexican border, there is always that option as well, thats what I used to do, the dentist was American, but cheaper to opeate in Mexico, and most of his patients were american as well.

If you're in the UK it might be cheaper getting it done in Hungary....
I had extensive dental work done there for a fraction of the UK price.... even with fare and accommodation!
I can recommend a place if you want.

If you are near a US major metropolitan center, many dental schools do these procedures for student practice for a much lower cost.

http://www.db.uth.tmc.edu/patient-care/student-clinics

Here is one near Houston.

We paid about $950 for ceramic crown here in Houston. Well, we didn't pay for it. Insurance paid half. (Yes, as one person mentioned, you'll need an exam, xrays, the whole diagnostic requirement.)

Provided that you don't get shot, or, your head cut off on the way to or from the Dentist.

All depends where you live and all that fun stuff.

Check the dental insurance, they tend to have high deductibles or a low maximum annual pay out...which considering a check up and a possible filling and x-ray could well eat most of that up.

If you're moving to a large city area, you might find a dental school who might do such things for cheap, possibly free for the labour and only charge you costs, but there might be a long wait and the quality of the work can range, though someone will be watching over the gobby stuuudents

Any recommendations?
