They are also nosey though, but sometimes its a good thing.

When my fiancee was ill they noticed her car hadn't left the driveway, so they came over with flu medicine and started making the special tea for her.

I've found some authentic Cadbury Finger (at Target, no less) and have already started nibbling those. Supposed to be for Christmas Eve.....

Yup, it is customary to spread cookies around. Either in a tin you can pick up anywhere, or on Christmas plates covered in special Christmas cling wrap.

I give my mailman some, but then again, I've known him for years.

I'd bring them some decent comfort food, such as a pie. (You can get a good one at a bakery if you can't bake one yourself.) If they like a bit of tipple, a bottle of wine would be OK, but in most cases, food would be a better choice.

Me too. I also bought a box of the fancy schmanzy "Indulgent" ones in case I needed an emergency gift. I gave a tin of them to an old neighbour last year and she raved about them.
My new neighbour left a bag filled with a Christmas Pudding, brandy butter and Christmas crackers on my front doorstep this week. So he may be getting the Cadburys.

What is the required etiquette? Do we now have to take a huge bucket full back?
I'm crap at baking so would really like to do something else, any ideas anyone?

A sincere thank you is all that is required. If you had had the time and inclination you might have invited her in for coffee or a drink but a gift in return is not required.

I baked approximately 20 dozen various types of cookies this week for gifts and will give to friends and neighbors. Only a thank you is required in return.

Merry Christmas.

Me, I'd be ungrateful. American cookies are crap and mostly baked from "frozen" dough with very little taste of than sugar :scared:

Now, if my neighBOUR was to drop in with some homemade taramasalata or home-baked sausage rolls (with chipolatas) or a couple of packets of prawn cocktail crisps - heck, I'd share some of my glenmorangie (sp)
